Rotter efterlader oftest ekskrementer og fedtede mørke belægninger på både vægge og gulve.
Skadedyrsbekæmpelse
Opdager man, at man har skadedyr i sin bolig eller f.eks. træværk, bør man opsøge professionel skadedyrsbekæmpelse. Forskellige slags skadedyr skal bekæmpes på forskellige måder. For både mus og rotter gælder der, at hvis man fjerner deres levemuligheder forsvinder de også. Man kan også lukke små og lidt større smuthuller for mus og rotter af med en museplage. Kakerlakker kan bekæmpes på flere forskellige måder afhængig af, hvor omfattende problemet er. Først bør man så vidt som muligt fjerne varme gemmesteder, da kakerlakker oftest vil opholde sig her. Ved man nogenlunde, hvor kakerlakkerne befinder sig, kan man også lægge kakerlakfælder ud. Er problemet meget omfattende kan man få brug for kemiske hjælpemidler, som enten kan være en form for gel eller sprøjtegift.
Det kan du selv gøre for forebyggelse
Gode rutiner i forhold til regelmæssig vedligeholdelse og rengøring af boligen er meget væsentlige i forhold til forebyggelse af skadedyr. Derudover bør man også sikre sig, at skraldespanden er helt lukket, når man smider skrald ud, og at der ikke ligger og flyder affald eller fødevarer, da det kan tiltrække især mus og rotter.
