Esbjerg er Danmarks 5. Største by og med sine over 100.00 indbyggere, har byen derfor selvsagt også et pulserende og voksende erhvervsliv. Helt traditionelt, i hvert fald før i tiden, var Esbjerg kendt som en fiskerby – primært grundet sin store fiskerihavn.
I dag er situationen en helt anden. Nok er der stadig fiskeindustri og en travl havn, men byen har efterhånden meget andet business at byde på.
Eksempelvis huser Esbjerg store og anerkendte virksomhed som Viking, Rambøll, Blue Water shipping og Semco Maritime. Desuden rangerer Esbjerg meget højt på listen over kommuner med indbyggere med høje indkomster. Det betyder, at der er særdeles god grobund for både opstart og videreudvikling af business i Esbjerg.
Et mekka for iværksættere
De senere år er der sket meget med Esbjerg som by. Det gælder både generelle tiltag for byfornyelse, men også i høj grad når det kommer til at skabe new business. Byen har fået meget mere moderne fokus på iværksætteri, og kommer med flere og flere tiltag for at tiltrække selvstændige.
Der er blevet skabt iværksætter netværk i både kommunalt og privat regi. Der er opstået kreative kontorfælleskaber, sparrings forums og kurser – hvor af flere af dem er delvist støttet af kommunale midler.
Man ønsker nemlig i høj grad, at kalde ”kloge hoveder hjem”. Rigtig mange unge esbjerggensere drager til universitetsbyer som Aarhus., København og Odense og vender aldrig hjem igen efter endt uddannelse. Det betyder ud fra et business synpunkt, at mange virksomheder i Esbjerg har svært ved at finde kvalificeret arbejdskraft til at udfylde ledige stillinger.
Netop derfor forsøger man fra kommunens side, at gøre byen mere attraktiv. Både for dem med en iværksætter i maven eller dem med en lang uddannelse bag sig.
Et sydvestjysk knudepunkt
Esbjerg er Sydvestjyllands klart største by. Det betyder, at beboere fra hele oplandet samt fra Sønderjylland søger mod byens mange indkøbsmuligheder. Desuden ligger byen ideelt placeret blot en halv times kørsel fra populære badebyer som Blåvand, Vejers og ferieøen Fanø. Steder der hele sommer sæsonen tiltrækker horder af turister fra både Tyskland, Norge og Sverige. Turister som gladelig besøger Esbjergs butikker, restauranter og caféer – særligt når vejret ikke viser sig fra sin bedste, mest solrige side.
Indbyggerne i Esbjerg er desuden med årene blevet mere åbne og omstillingsparate, og tager derfor oftest i mod nye business tiltag med kyshånd og stor købevilje.
